TTLB Opinion- Cut-price deal for Southampton star can help salvage Tottenham’s 2024-25 campaign

Southampton are open to accepting a cut-price fee for Tottenham’s summer target Kyle Walker-Peters

Tottenham Hotspur have started the January transfer window well by bringing in young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague.

Defensive reinforcements have become an absolute necessity for Spurs following persistent injury problems this season. Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies have been out for more than a month now, while Destiny Udogie became the latest defender to enter the treatment room.

Ange Postecoglou has been without his core defenders for a while now and has had to rely on a makeshift backline. Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray have been paired together, but the Lilywhites’ defensive fragilities have become evident. At full-back, Pedro Porro has nowhere been close to his best in recent weeks and months whereas Djed Spence picked up a stupid red card in the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

All these factors have led to underwhelming displays from Ange Postecoglou’s side, especially at the back. Thus, it is not rocket science that the club chiefs are hunting for defensive reinforcements and they could do well by reviving their interest in one player.

According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Southampton are braced for cut-price offers for Kyle Walker-Peters in this winter transfer window.

Kyle Walker-Peters, who arrived at Southampton initially on loan from Tottenham five years ago, is out of contract in June. The full-back is not keen to renew terms with the Saints, who are at the foot of the Premier League table and facing relegation despite managerial change. They are on six points and on course for the worst-ever Premier League campaign.

Having entered the final six months of his contract (Transfermarkt), Walker-Peters can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club ahead of a free transfer switch in the off-season. However, with Southampton open to cashing in the two-cap England international now, Spurs must look to bring him back to North London.

Paul Robinson believes Antonio Conte would love Kyle Walker-Peters back at Tottenham Hotspur.

Walker-Peters was linked with a return to his boyhood club in the summer but a move didn’t materialise. Over the years, the full-back has matured and grown into a reliable player for Southampton, helping the side achieve top-flight promotion back in May 2024. He has gone onto rack up a total of 185 appearances for the South Coast side thus far and has been one of their rare bright spots in an otherwise forgettable campaign back with the big boys.

Big Ange doesn’t boast of a large squad filled with quality options, and with him admitting last month that he doesn’t see Davies playing as a left-back anymore, the Lilywhites must look to reinforce the full-back position.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

As Spence is comfortable operating at left-back too, signing a right-back to compete and cover for Porro would make sense. And Walker-Peters would be a smart option. Also, the 27-year-old is adept at playing at left-back/wing-back, where he has been largely deployed at Southampton this season.

On a cut-price deal, the Englishman’s acquisition would make a lot of sense for Spurs.
