Tottenham offered opportunity to land former Manchester City star; not considered priority

Tottenham Hotspur are in dire need of a new centre back in the ongoing winter transfer window, and Daniel Levy is aggressively pursuing defensive reinforcements; however, with multiple players linked with White Hart Lane, there is not a top target determined yet (at least in the media), but recent reports indicate that former Manchester City CB Ko Itakura has emerged as a backup option for the Lilywhites if they are to fail to land other options.

The 27-year-old Japanese international spent three years at Manchester City (2019-2022), which makes him familiar with English football, and that should add to Postecoglou’s appeal to sign him.

Senior transfer correspondent Paul O’Keefe has confirmed that Itakura’s services have been offered to White Hart Lane. However, at the moment the chiefs at Hotspur Way regard him as a backup option rather than their primary target.

To put things into context, this does suggest that Johan Lange has identified another central defender as the prime target, and the technical director does have a history of keeping fans guessing, with transfers like Antonin Kinsky and Wilson Odobert coming to light only when they were close to completion.

Itakura will bring a lot of needed qualities to the roster at Hotspur Way with his versatile profile, complemented by his tactical awareness, and the ability to adapt to different playing styles will give Postecoglou a much broader tactical dynamic going into games. However, at the moment he is not the first target, possibly because of his age, given how Levy has indicated intent to secure players who fit long-term ambitions of late.
