Jamie O’Hara names Tottenham star who was ‘superb’ vs Liverpool

Tottenham starlet Archie Gray was excellent in central defence vs Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur edged past Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at home on Wednesday evening.

Spurs rallied despite Dominic Solanke’s second-half goal being chopped off for offside by the VAR, as teenage prodigy Lucas Bergvall grabbed the headlines with a superb finish set up by the England striker. Ange Postecoglou set his team up in a more pragmatic fashion than in the majority of games we’ve witnessed during his time at the club, limiting Liverpool to few and far chances in between.

Plenty of Tottenham players impressed against the Premier League leaders. Young Archie Gray stepped up and produced a memorable display on the night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Archie Gray produced a dominant display in defence vs Liverpool in the Carabao Cup

The Englishman was a part of the Spurs side that was demolished 6-3 by Arne Slot’s side a few weeks ago at home in the Premier League, so he would have entered the fray knowing how big the task to stop them was going to be. And he was a rock at the back for Ange Postecoglou’s side alongside Radu Dragusin, keeping the ruthless Liverpool forwards at bay.

Ex-Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara was full of praise for Gray after the game. On his X account, he wrote: “Archie Gray has been superb”, followed by three ‘applause emojis.’

Indeed, the England youth international has admirably operated as a makeshift centre-back in the injury absences of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies. He hasn’t looked out of place playing in central defence in recent weeks, showing his composure on the ball and reading of the game.

Playing on the left of a back four, Gray made three clearances, three interceptions and one tackle. He won 1/1 aerial duel against the Reds. The Durham-born talent was also composed on the ball as he completed 42/55 passes, successfully delivered two long crosses and made one key pass.

However, the biggest highlight of the youngster’s display was that he was not even dribbled past once, considering he had come up against world-class forwards like Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo. (Stats courtesy: SofaScore)

Gray’s stock continues to rise in a Spurs shirt. He has demonstrated great maturity and leadership skills at such a tender age, and his display to help his team keep a clean sheet against the best side in England would do his confidence a world of good.
