Timo Werner-like concern preventing Tottenham transfer for 3G/A star

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur have been intensely looking to bolster their squad in the ongoing winter transfer window, and Daniel Levy is targeting one player in particular in order to do so: Randal Kolo Muani.

The North Londoners are said to have already agreed on personal terms with the 26-year-old Frenchman; however, the Lilywhites are a bit hesitant over the transfer structure.

Journalist Dean Jones, speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, insists that Daniel Levy and Tottenham don’t want to commit to a loan transfer that includes an obligation to make it permanent, with the North Londoners having previous experience with Timo Werner, with the RB Leipzig loanee putting in a series of below-par performances in the ongoing campaign. The German international has not made much of an impact this season, and that makes Tottenham nervous about making a similar mistake with Kolo Muani.

Jones said:

“They’re not going to do an obligation because they don’t want to get burnt on it. And there’s a chance he’s like Timo Werner or something. And I know Werner hasn’t got an obligation, but it’s just as well because they would not be very happy with that.

“You don’t really know that Kolo Muani is definitely going to fit in. But if there’s an option on it, I suppose they’re definitely open to the idea of signing him, whereas some of the other teams in for him, like Juventus, aren’t so much. For Kolo Muani himself, this is a really key stage of his career.”

A Werner comparison

Comparing Werner and Kolo Muani’s recent form could bring some light to why Levy is concerned. The German international has zero goals and three assists in 17 Premier League games this season, while Kolo Muani has scored just two goals and has only one assist in 10 French top tier outings. While the former Frankfurt striker has shown glimpses of his potential, the numbers don’t offer the needed assurance to commit to a big free obligation.

And Tottenham will want to avoid any situation where they invest heavily in the player and they end up becoming a surplus at N17. But despite these concerns, Tottenham are open to a transfer deal if it is structured with an option to buy rather than an obligation.
