Blow for Tottenham as Bundesliga target opens door to Chelsea move

Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens favours a move to Chelsea over Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have been exploring possibilities of bringing in a new wide attacker during this winter transfer window as Daniel Levy looks to build on the success that the Lilywhites enjoyed in the past summer window. As per reports, the chiefs at the Hotspur Way have identified Borussia Dortmund starlet Jamie Gittens.

Borussia Dortmund have constantly been at the risk of losing Jamie Gittens and interest in him seems to be growing. Widely regarded as a rising star in the Bundesliga, the Englishman has shown maturity beyond his years with his outstanding displays since his breakout season in 2022/23.

The 20-year-old’s talent and potential have gone unnoticed, with top clubs across Europe regularly scouting him to evaluate his progress. In Jamie Gittens, who has been one of Dortmund’s best players this season with 10 goals and five assists across all competitions to date, Spurs can recruit an attacker who will suit Ange Postecoglou’s vertical brand of football. The Australian tactician would love a winger with the flair, running power, pace and unpredictability of the Reading-born talent.

That being said, Tottenham are not the only interested Premier League club in Gittens’ signature. According to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Chelsea have joined Spurs in the race for the Dortmund winger. In fact, Gittens would be ready to consider a move to Chelsea in the summer should Dortmund miss out on Champions League qualification.

Several clubs from Europe have enquired about the England under-21 international, who is under contract at Signal Iduna Park until the summer of 2028 (Transfermarkt). So, the German outfit are firmly in control of Gittens’ future and can slap a big asking price on his head. The aforementioned report adds that they would only entertain a bid in the region of £84m to sell their highly-rated prospect.

Gittens potentially opening the door for Chelsea is a big blow to Tottenham, who view the Dortmund talent as a long-term replacement for Son Heung-min.

For Spurs, it is crucial to ensure that they bring in a new wide attacker in this transfer window to cover and compete with Son and Timo Werner, with the latter producing underwhelming displays.

Signing a left-winger would ensure that Big Ange has needed depth in wide areas for the second half of the campaign. However, with Dortmund not keen to part ways with Gittens in this window and Chelsea supposedly emerging as early favourites for his signature in the summer, Spurs perhaps would be wise to turn their attention elsewhere for Son’s long-term replacement.
