Tottenham urged to retain Ange Postecoglou; pass on Serie A winning tactician

Opinion: Tottenham need to bid Ange Postecoglou farewell, but Massimiliano Allegri is not the answer

Tottenham have held informal talks with former Juventus coach Max Allegri

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is under more pressure than ever after yet another Premier League loss—this time to Everton on Sunday.

Sitting 15th in the Premier League table and only eight points above the dreaded drop zone, Spurs’ woeful league form marks a stark contrast to the optimism that surrounded the club last season when Ange Postecoglou’s high-octane, aggressive and exciting brand of football led the team to a fifth-place finish and reignited hope among their fans.

The North Londoners look as though they could match their worst-ever season in the English top-flight with the way things are going. Their recent form does not provide much optimism that Ange Postecoglou, who has been keen on new signings, will turn things around at White Hart Lane, largely given the combination of unfortunate injuries and tepid displays.

Spurs’ downward spiral in terms of performances and results in the Premier League has not quelled speculation surrounding Postecoglou. While the Greek-Australian coach retains internal backing as per reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, external pressure continues to mount from fans and pundits alike. However, more poor performances and results in the upcoming games would intensify the pressure on Daniel Levy to sack the current Tottenham boss and hire a new manager.

As a result, the club are doing their due diligence in case they need to make a managerial change in the midst of the campaign and have an interest in former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri. However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King thinks the club would be better off retaining Big Ange’s services rather than hiring Massimiliano Allegri.

“Allegri isn’t the man for the job,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He’s one of those managers who has only ever achieved things at a club like Juventus. I don’t think his name is big enough to sort out the problems in North London if Postecoglou goes.

“Personally, I would just keep Postecoglou, if that is how the club are thinking.”

Big Ange retains the backing of the board but for how long?

Max Allegri is a high-profile manager who has experience winning trophies in Italy. Across two successful spells at Juventus, he won six Serie A titles, five Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa trophies, as well as leading them to the Champions League final twice in three years.

The 57-year-old is currently a free agent having been fired two days after winning the 2024 Coppa Italiana final in May. That being said, though, Allegri is not the right profile of manager for a club that requires a balance of winning trophies and playing an attractive brand of football. The Italian tactician has been a serial winner in his career but without employing an exciting football approach, similar to that of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Tottenham should not go down that route again, instead show patience with Big Ange, bring in reinforcements this transfer window and give him time to turn things around. If things still don’t improve, it would make sense to part ways with the Australian.
