Tottenham star suffers knee injury; set for spell on sidelines

Dominic Solanke missed the Everton game on Sunday after tweaking his knee in training

Tottenham Hotspur have somehow made it to January 20 without signing an outfield player.

Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky arrived from Slavia Prague at the start of the transfer window, signed to provide cover for the injured No.1 Guglielmo Vicario. Ange Postecoglou had 12 senior players missing for the 3-2 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday and those who remain available are now looking knackered.

The North Londoners fell deeper into crisis over the course of the weekend. Club-record signing Dominic Solanke has become the latest injury casualty at the club. Ange Postecoglou revealed that the centre-forward sustained an injury in training, tweaking his knee while shooting which led to him missing the defeat at Everton.

Dominic Solanke is set to be out for weeks after tweaking his knee in training

“Dom just started training and sort of tweaked his knee while trying to have a shot and missed. We don’t think it’s serious but it’ll be a few weeks,” Ange Postecoglou gave an injury update on Dominic Solanke.

Solanke’s injury is another body blow for Postecoglou. The England international has been shouldering the responsibility of leading the Spurs attack all alone since arriving from Bournemouth in the summer. Richarlison missing the majority of the first part of the season meant he was playing regularly for the Lilywhites.

Solanke has netted 11 goals and supplied six assists in 29 appearances across all competitions. The 27-year-old may have not proven himself to be a prolific goalscorer for Tottenham but his pressing, work rate, energy, link-up and hold-up play make him a perfect fit in Big Ange’s system. With the severity of the injury now confirmed, the striker is expected to miss Spurs’ crucial games against Hoffenheim, Leicester City, IF Elfsborg, Brentford, Liverpool and Aston Villa.

However, he wasn’t the only player missing the game at Goodison Park. Yves Bissouma and Brennan Johnson were also not available on Sunday, taking Spurs’ absent players to 10—also including Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, Rodrigo Bentancur, Wilson Odobert and Timo Werner. Johnson will be out for a few weeks too which limits Big Ange’s attacking options even further and increases the pressure on the club to sign a new forward.
