Tottenham hindering West Ham's plans for Angel Gomes

For most of last summer’s transfer window, Tottenham were linked with Lille’s diminutive English midfielder Angel Gomes.

As his contract ends at the end of this season, Gomes looks set to move to London, though it looks like he may not be arriving at Spurs after all.

Tottenham Hotspur are looking likely to miss out on Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, with West Ham looking to secure a free summer arrival.

The Lilywhites were closely linked with a move for the 24-year-old, who decided earlier in the season to run down his Lille contract.

The Man United academy graduate left Old Trafford four-and-a-half years ago in search of regular playing time and has since established himself as one of the most reliable midfield operators in Ligue 1.

This has been a tricky season for the England international, however, as he has missed nine games for Lille this season—first through concussion and then sitting out with a calf injury. In total, he has made 16 appearances this season across all competitions, registering a goal and assist each for Lille.

New West Ham boss Graham Potter is keen to reinforce his midfield ahead of next season, though Tottenham could yet beat the Irons to Gomes’s signature with a better wage package.

TTLB Opinion

Compared to West Ham, Spurs have able midfielders Gomes would have to compete with were here to arrive at Hotspur Way. The Hammers are looking at a bigger rebuild in the middle of the pitch compared to their North London counterparts, meaning the 24-year-old will have a better chance of quickly establishing himself as a Premier League regular at the London Stadium.

Spurs were monitoring him for a while, but it looks like they may miss out on Gomes, though it won’t be the biggest loss in the world given their current midfield, and in any case they need to prioritise defence and attack over midfield in this and the coming summer transfer window.
