Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso with Tottenham clause eyed by Wolves
Back in the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur sold Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis for a paltry £8.4m fee, although they made a deal to sign Johnny Cardoso for a sum of €25 million in what seemed like a pre-agreed move.
Johnny Cardoso has been one of the most exciting young midfield talents in La Liga over the recent past and Spurs’ interest in him shows they are extremely keen on his signature and see him as a long-term option.
The USA international has slowly but steadily become a regular fixture in Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis side. Operating primarily as a holding midfielder in Pellegrini’s system, the 23-year-old has made 13 La Liga appearances to date this season. He has impressed enough in the Spanish top-flight to catch the eye of several clubs across Europe.

According to a report from Spanish outlet Relevo, Wolverhampton Wanderers are eyeing a move for Cardoso in this transfer window. They have contacted Betis regarding the player, although talks are not yet advanced.

Given Cardoso is one of Pellegrini’s important players, Betis are currently keen to hold on to the defensive midfielder. However, Spurs could scupper Wolves’ plans by bringing forward their transfer plans. They had expressed an interest in signing the American starlet at the start of the winter transfer window, but with the Wanderers enquiring about the player, the Hotspur Way chiefs must look to sign him now.
A couple of weeks ago, one would imagine that Tottenham’s midfield unit was not a priority position to strengthen. However, with Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma suffering injury problems recently, coupled with Rodrigo Bentancur’s lack of reliability to stay healthy, a player of Cardoso’s profile could make a massive difference to Big Ange’s side.

The 19-cap USA international specializes in breaking the opposition’s attacks and regaining possession for his team. He is exactly the kind of player Spurs have lacked since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg departed for Marseille during the previous summer transfer window. Not only is the 23-year-old a strong ball-winner but technically solid and can initiate attacks from the base of midfield.
