Tottenham beat a host of European clubs to land Lucas Bergvall last year
Tottenham Hotspur have been devoid of success for a while now, and thus it was important for them to opt for a different route in terms of transfer strategy and recruitment to slowly rebuild their squad after haphazard signings in recent years.
In the last two years, Spurs have focused on recruiting young, hungry and dynamic talents with huge potential that can be unlocked within the corridors of Hotspur Way. Almost a year back, the Lilywhites managed to thrash out a deal with Djurgardens IF for Swedish talent Lucas Bergvall. However, it was not an easy deal to complete.
According to a recent report from Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt (h/t The Express), Tottenham had beaten competition from 23 clubs to land Lucas Bergvall. Clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Juventus and Barcelona were all in the mix.

It has been revealed that the Lilywhites had put across the most tantalizing proposal for both Djurgardens IF and the Swedish midfielder, which convinced the player to snub interest from several clubs and join Ange Postecoglou’s forces at White Hart Lane. Tottenham paid £8.5m, with additional add-ons, to secure the highly sought-after talent’s signature, and he has now become a crucial cog in Ange Postecoglou’s team.
Brought in as an investment for the future rather than an immediate starter, Bergvall has been one of the beneficiaries of an injury crisis that has hit Spurs in the last three to four months. The Sweden international took time to adjust to the rigours of Premier League football, which is natural for a young player coming from a different league.
Big Ange was reluctant to throw the midfielder at the deep end and slowly integrated him into the team with minutes in cup competitions. However, a seven-match domestic ban imposed on Rodrigo Bentancur in November for off-field problems, coupled with substandard displays from experienced players James Maddison and Yves Bissouma, led to Big Ange giving opportunities to Bergvall in the first XI.

And the Stockholm-born talent has grabbed those opportunities with both hands. A regular starter in midfield now, he has racked up 27 appearances across all competitions thus far, scoring an important goal in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at home—just moments after escaping a second yellow card. The midfielder also has two assists under his banner.

27 appearances and counting is quite a healthy return for a player who was not expected to be a regular starter for Tottenham at the beginning of the season. It has to be noted that the club under technical director Johan Lange’s stewardship have been rather exemplary in landing exciting young prospects, and the signing of Bergvall is one such glaring example.
