Tottenham star to undergo further tests; injury extent to be determined

Tottenham set to welcome back several injured stars against Manchester United.

James Maddison missed Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester City with an injury

There is no doubt that persistent injury problems have been a huge factor in the challenges Tottenham Hotspur have faced this season.

Spurs defender Cristian Romero returned to training last week, having been sidelined for months with a quad problem. His centre-back partner, Micky van de Ven is also on the comeback trail from a hamstring injury that has seen him miss a lot of action this season.

Club insider Paul O Keefe has now given a fresh injury update on another Tottenham star. He claims on X that Spurs are trying to discover the extent of James Maddison’s knock, as it could be either down to tiredness or an actual injury.

James Maddison shares a message with his teammates ahead of Tottenham Hotspur's game against Brighton.
James Maddison picked up a calf injury and missed the defeat to Leicester City

“James Maddison had an issue with his calf so assessing to determine the extent or whether just fatigue,” Paul O Keefe tweeted on Monday.

James Maddison missed Spurs’ embarrassing 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Leicester City at home on Sunday. Before the game, Ange Postecoglou had revealed that the midfielder was unavailable due to a slight knock and he wasn’t 100 per cent.

-> “3 weeks”- Clock ticking down on injured Tottenham star’s return to training

This setback came right after the England international delivered a splendid performance in Tottenham’s 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim in the Europa League in Germany last week. The 28-year-old had opened the scoring in the third minute itself, lashing the ball into the roof of the net beyond the Hoffenheim goalkeeper after expertly controlling Pedro Porro’s measured long ball.

Maddison had played 89 minutes on the night to help Postecoglou’s side guarantee a spot in the Europa League knockout rounds. However, the playmaker’s absence was hugely felt against his former employers on Sunday, with the Lilywhites lacking the guile and creative spark to unlock a rigid Leicester defence.

Dejan Kulusevski seemingly looked extremely fatigued against Leicester, which could explain why he was so ineffective off the right flank. Son Heung-min was anonymous in the second half when the team needed their skipper to step up and deliver the goods, while Richarlison was taken off with potentially another injury setback.

Whether Maddison would have changed the course of the game against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side remains unknown. But the creative midfielder makes Big Ange’s Spurs tick with his incisive passing, movement and link-up play, and he possibly could have helped the North Londoners off the back of his sensational display against Hoffenheim in the Europa League.

Nonetheless, the White Hart Lane faithful will be hoping that Maddison’s injury isn’t anything serious and that he overcomes the problem as quickly as possible and returns to the squad to help out Big Ange and Co. in the crucial upcoming games.
