Tottenham Hotspur are keen to sign Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams
Tottenham Hotspur lost yet another Premier League game this season on Sunday afternoon, leaving Ange Postecoglou and Co. only eight points clear of the drop zone after a shocking 2-1 home loss to Leicester City.
The Australian tactician’s squad has been decimated by injury problems for months now, and despite demanding some help in this ongoing transfer market, the Spurs hierarchy are yet to loosen their purse strings after the acquisition of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
The North Londoners have been in the market for a new attacker, following an injury crisis that has seen the likes of Wilson Odobert, Mikey Moore and Richarlison miss a lot of football during the first half of the season. While Richarlison and Moore have returned from their respective problems, Ange Postecoglou suffered the double blow of losing Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson for weeks before the Everton game.

Now, according to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham are ready to go head-to-head with fiercest rivals Arsenal for the signing of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. They are prepared to pay the Spanish attacker’s €58million release clause.
Nico Williams was one of the star performers behind Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, where Luis de la Fuente’s men beat England 2-1 in the final. The Pamplona-born talent, who was heavily linked with moves to Barcelona and Chelsea last summer, has blown hot and cold this season with only four goal contributions in 19 La Liga games thus far.
Yet, the 22-year-old could be a fantastic addition to Spurs’ ranks. The Lilywhites are crying out for some injection of quality at the attacking end of the pitch, and Williams with his pace, flair, dynamism and dribbling skills could prove them exactly with that. The Bilbao star is capable of operating on both flank, so his versatility should hugely help a Spurs side devoid of options in wide areas.

While Tottenham is ready to trigger his release clause, the decision will eventually lie with Williams on whether he wants to join Big Ange’s forces this month. Given the position Spurs are in at the moment—eight points above the drop zone—a burgeoning talent like Williams may hesitate to leave Bilbao now and wait for better prospects at the end of the season.

The least the Hotspur Way chiefs could do is understand whether the player is keen to leave Bilbao and come to White Hart Lane, via his entourage. If Williams is not interested, Spurs must quickly switch their focus to alternative targets as the winter window closes down in less than a week.
