David Ornstein believes Tottenham have money to spend this January
Tottenham Hotspur have signed only one player in the ongoing transfer window, goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. The player’s signing came as a result of a serious injury suffered by Guglielmo Vicario at the backend of last year, leaving Ange Postecoglou with only Fraser Forster, aged 36 and towards the end of his career, as the only reliable option in between the sticks.

The Lilywhites’ silence in the transfer market for the better part of the last four weeks has been surprising to many, not least their first team head coach, who has urged them to try and do some more business before deadline day on February 3rd. With less than a week to go, Spurs are said to be scrambling for fresher purchases this month but are running short on time.
Money, however, is far from a problem for the Daniel Levy-run side and the same was confirmed by The Athletic correspondent and extremely reliable journalist David Ornstein. He appeared a YouTube episode filmed by The Athletic and was specifically asked about what Tottenham can do better. Ornstein had the following words to say in response.
“I think Tottenham have some work to do. There is financial room to manoeuvre and in the attacking line and in the defensive line they would like to strengthen if they can. Initially, it sounded like they would do some loans after the arrival of Kinsky, but they perhaps they could go down the permanent route now as they’re struggling so much with injuries and struggling so much in the Premier League.”
It goes without saying that Tottenham are facing a messy situation in their dressing room with over half of their squad members injured. There has come a point or maybe a couple of them this season that Postecoglou has had to turn to his youth ranks to make up numbers, a problem that has been compounded by the board’s lack of support in building a more competent side with better depth.

Even a journalist with as much knowledge and insider information as Ornstein expected more from Tottenham but it is fairly surprising that they have done nothing to address the issue. In the aftermath of the Leicester City defeat, however, it emerged that the club was planning to make three signings to back Postecoglou in the very near future, so it remains to be seen whether business is indeed conducted as per expectation.
