Tottenham urged to push for North American attacker this January

Barcelona threaten to derail Tottenham Hotspur interest in Jonathan David.

Lille striker Jonathan David has been linked with a move to Tottenham for months

Tottenham Hotspur have not won any of their last seven games in the Premier League, including just one in the last 11, and that came against bottom side Southampton in mid-December. As a result, the club are a lowly 15th in the table, on course for their worst-ever Premier League finish and with that has intensified pressure on Ange Postecoglou.

Ange Postecoglou has been facing an incredible injury crisis for months that has affected his squad across all positions, including goalkeepers, on the field. In attack, the 59-year-old is without the services of Dominic Solanke, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert and Richarlison.

Solanke is set to be out until mid-March for Spurs after suffering a knee injury in training before the defeat against Everton. Johnson will also miss the next few games with injury, while Richarlison suffered a potential fresh injury setback in the 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on Sunday.

Postecoglou is perhaps now on borrowed time, and one thing is for sure, he needs backing in the transfer window. Spurs have looked at several players this month. They targeted Randal Kolo Muani but the Frenchman has joined Juventus on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David has also been looked at amid the club’s striker hunt.

Now, Football London journalists Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest have been discussing on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast about Jonathan David being a potential option to strengthen Tottenham’s attacking ranks. Gold says that Spurs have looked at David in the past and they retain some interest in the Lille star.

“Yeah. For me, if you’re looking at a striker, do you just go for Jonathan David at Lille? He’s out of contracts in the summer,” Guest said.

“Just, yeah, it’d be better financially to sign him in the summer when he’s on the free. But you need a striker now. So just get him on the cut-price deal.”

“And he can play at wide, can’t he? As well. So, I think it’s on the left, maybe,” Gold replied to Guest.

“I’m trying to remember now when we did all our research on him. Because Spurs have looked at him, he’s a player they’ve got some interest in. And I agree with you.

“If you can get him for a cut-price deal now, why are they not going for it? And Lille surely would take some money more than nothing.”

Bringing in a new striker becomes more critical after Solanke’s latest injury blow that will leave Big Ange with another makeshift starter in the starting XI, given how Richarlison also made a groin complaint against Leicester City that saw him being substituted in the second half.

David is enjoying another strong season in Ligue 1—possibly his last in Lille colours. The Canadian international, who is out of contract in the summer (Transfermarkt), has netted 18 goals and boasts a further tally of seven assists in 31 games across all competitions this season, and Big Ange’s side could do with that clinical presence upfront given their woes on both ends of the pitch of late.

Spurs are in a strong position financially to offer the 24-year-old a fat contract whilst providing him with chances to take his career to the next level. And on a potential cut-price deal now, the Hotspur Way chiefs must pull all out all the stops to bring the North American to North London.
