Ange Postecoglou remains bullish that Tottenham can still enjoy a special season despite Premier League woes
Tottenham Hotspur have endured a lean patch in the Premier League for weeks and months now.
Ange Postecoglou and Co. have slumped to 15th place in the table after just one win in its last 11 Premier League games. Considering the injury crisis they have suffered this campaign, the Lilywhites are in desperate need of new signings. The need for reinforcements has been evident for several weeks now at White Hart Lane and with just days remaining in the transfer window, time is running out.
The Australian tactician is under severe pressure at N17 after the humiliating 2-1 loss to relegation-battling Leicester City extended their dismal run to just one win in 11 Premier League matches. Following the defeat on Sunday, there were loud jeers at full-time and Ange Postecoglou appeared to confront a fan who had directed expletives towards his way as he walked down the tunnel.

Amid the rising fan anger and frustration at Tottenham’s dismal Premier League campaign, Postecoglou says he is unaffected by speculation surrounding his future and still believes his team can enjoy a “special” season despite poor form in the top flight.
When asked in a press conference how he is dealing with the big pressure and questions about his job every week, the Australian told Football London:
“It doesn’t affect me, it never has, it never will. My view has never been about self-preservation or security. It’s about trying to achieve and we’re still in a position where we can do that. You suggest there’s a running commentary around me at the moment which is not surprising considering our league position. I don’t have to respond to that or get involved with that, it just doesn’t interest or affect me.
“What is important to me is my responsibility to…as I said, people can choose to ignore it, but we’re still in a great position this year, I’m going to push this group of players and everyone at the club to not lose sight of the fact that this is a tough spot we’re in but the possibilities of us doing something special are still there if we work our way through it.”

In a big boost to his squad ahead of Spurs’ final Europa League group stage game against Swedish side IF Elfsborg, Big Ange said Micky van de Ven has trained well in the last eight to 10 days and is available to play some part on Thursday evening after recovering from a hamstring injury that nearly ruled him out of action for two months.

As far as other positive injury updates go, Yves Bissouma trained on Wednesday and will be available alongside Pape Matar Sarr for the visit of Elfsborg. Richarlison also featured in training after he was forced off during the 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on Sunday with a groin complaint.

Tottenham require a win over Elfsborg at home on Thursday to automatically progress to the Europa League round of 16 without having to play a two-legged play-off match in early February; this result would mean they do not have to rely on anyone else’s result. Whilst a draw might be enough, that would mean waiting to see what happens elsewhere.
