Arsenal legend urges Tottenham against making Postecoglou call that will make fans ‘go mad’

Paul Merson urges Tottenham Hotspur to retain Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou’s future has recently become a top of public discussion with practically every fan and pundit giving their two cents on the matter. Not very surprisingly, there is almost an equal divide between the two sides as some seek his firing, while others believe the former Celtic coach deserves to keep his place owing to injuries and performances in the cups.

Paul Merson urges Tottenham Hotspur to retain Ange Postecoglou.

Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson, was the latest to chip in with his verdict. He had the following to say on the matter.

“Stick with Ange. If he goes now, they’re going to go with someone who’s got to come up and shut shop up, play 10 at the back, play counter-attacking football – the fans will go mad again. Give him a chance. Give him next year as well and I’m not saying that because I’m Arsenal and want them to lose every week. Tottenham are a good team to watch when they’ve got their players fit. I’d be patient. Who knows, they’re still in all the cups. They’ve probably got more chance of winning the Europa League because they haven’t got Liverpool in the Europa League.”

It is incredibly difficult as a neutral to go against what Merson is saying because Tottenham have simply been the league’s most unlucky side with injuries. Postecoglou has done all he could with almost no squad depth in the last month or two, a problem that was compounded following the board’s reluctance to acquire players in a timely manner in the ongoing transfer window.

While a 15th-placed standing in the Premier League is not what Spurs had planned at the start of the campaign, there is still a reasonably good shot at winning the Europa League. Ange Postecoglou has had a number of the bigger sides this season a number of times and with a fully fit squad, there is no reason why he cannot bring him a continental trophy.

The Carabao Cup is another competition in which the Lilywhites have a strong chance at going all the way in. Currently, they hold a 1-0 lead in the semi-final over Liverpool and if they can pass the Anfield test next week, it would be fair to say that Postecoglou’s men would be firm favourites to win the final ahead of either of their opponents, Arsenal or Newcastle United.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

If Spurs fail to come away with anything at the end of the campaign, as many fear, May or June would be a good time to discuss what went terribly wrong. It would be a good time to discuss a much-called-for squad rebuild in the summer to prepare well for the upcoming campaign when Postecoglou is undoubtedly determined to right the wrongs from this year.
