Tottenham Hotspur revive interest in signing Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to make an outfield signing in the January transfer window, having only acquired goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague.

Indeed, the Lilywhites haven’t been active at all this month, despite being linked with several targets. Despite all the chat around a new striker arriving at White Hart Lane, there has been no productive update so far.

Club record signing Dominic Solanke has been ruled out until mid-March with a knee problem, while Richarlison has struggled for fitness throughout large portions of the season. Moreover, Wilson Odobert has been out since October following a hamstring surgery. Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson are also on the sidelines.

As such, it appears that Tottenham may have a striker lined up as a target before the February deadline. According to a report from the Daily Mail, Spurs are among clubs weighing up a move for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal have also been linked with Mathys Tel, who is set to leave the Allianz Arena in this winter transfer window. The teenager is heading into the final week of the window as a highly coveted player, with Bayern Munich ready to sanction a loan deal.

Spurs briefly spoke about signing the teenage prodigy back in the summer of 2023 when they sold Harry Kane to Bayern. Now, they seem to have revived their interest in the Frenchman.

Tel joined the Bavarian giants from Rennes in the summer of 2022 and has made 82 appearances for the club, registering 16 goals and seven assists. The versatile forward contributed five league goals during his debut season as Bayern won the 2022-23 Bundesliga title. He has featured 13 times in all competitions for the German champions this season and has predominantly been used from the bench by new coach Vincent Kompany.

The Sarcelles-born talent has been an unused substitute in Bayern’s last three games, leading Tel now to leave the club on loan for regular minutes. At 19, Tel fits the profile of signings that Tottenham have made in the last few years. The France under-21 international can operate on the left and through the middle as a No.9, and such versatility should help the North Londoners whose attacking options have been stretched in recent weeks.

With Solanke not expected to be unavailable until the third week of March, Tel could come in at Spurs and immediately take the leading role up top in Big Ange’s XI. And on a dry loan, there would be no risk attached either. That being said, Tottenham must push to get the Bayern starlet’s signature before the transfer window.
