Tottenham considering late January move for Olympic silver medalist

Tottenham have revived their interest in RC Lens midfielder Andy Diouf

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a shockingly poor run of form in the Premier League this season, winning just one of their last 11 games.

There is a clear need for reinforcements across the field thanks to the injury crisis that they have suffered in recent months, and Daniel Levy may end up bringing in a young player to support Ange Postecoglou before the transfer window slams shut next week.

Lens midfielder Andy Diouf has already been linked with a move to Spurs, but now the North Londoners seem to have upped their ante in his pursuit. According to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham have sounded out Andy Diouf after laying the groundwork in France in recent weeks.

The French midfielder moved to Lens in a €15m deal from Swiss side FC Basel in July 2023. The 21-year-old, who was a part of France’s Summer Olympics team that won a Silver medal, has been one of the best performers for Lens this season. He has racked up 19 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring and assisting a goal apiece as Lens are seventh in the table and fighting for a spot in Europe.

Diouf has perhaps caught the attention of Tottenham with his passing ability, ball-winning skills, reading of the game and physicality. The Lilywhites’ scouts watched the central midfielder in action against Greek side Panathinaikos in the UEFA Conference League back in August, so the club would have had a lot of time to consider his progress in Ligue 1 before touching the player’s base.

For Spurs, Diouf would fit the mould of the signings they have made in recent years, a young, promising talent with room to develop and grow under Ange Postecoglou’s watchful eyes. The North Londoners have shown, through the likes of Destiny Udogie, Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray, that they can not only persuade young talents to join them but will reward them with regular minutes and help unlock their potential if they are good enough as players.

Tottenham are lacking the desired depth in their squad to compete on all fronts. Yves Bissouma and James Maddison have been extremely inconsistent this term, with the latter suffering a calf injury last week.

At 21, Diouf could be viewed as a potential long-term replacement for Bissouma, who is out of contract next summer. The midfielder will be another addition to the exciting pool of the club’s young talents if Spurs can agree on a fee with Lens.
