Tottenham Hotspur have one of the best fullbacks in world football in Pedro Porro, who is not only an attacking menace but also a decent defender when it comes to the defensive side of things, and his performances have replicated into links with Real Madrid; however, TV commentator Ian Darke doesn’t agree with it, insisting that the Lilywhites should be looking to upgrade on the former Sporting CP fullback.
Porro, a defensive liability?

Drake insists that while the 25-year-old has key attacking attributes, he believes that the North Londoners may need someone who is a more solid defender if they want to compete for silverware.
Porro has been a regular starter at White Hart Lane since moving to England from Sporting CP in 2023 (taking over the reins from Emerson Royal), and he has continued to do so while contributing to a couple of goals and five assists in 23 league appearances in the ongoing campaign. However, we have seen the Lilywhites defence struggle highly in the ongoing campaign while managing only four clean sheets in the Premier League.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Drake said:
“Right-back might be another area where Tottenham ought to look. He may be good going forward, Pedro Porro, but is he good enough defensively? You’ve got managers who want full-backs to bomb forward. It’s in the same way goalkeepers can play with their feet, but can they make saves?”
Make it make sense…
Despite Darke’s concerns, Porro is likely to remain the first choice at Hotspur Way for the rest of the ongoing season, given how Tottenham has bigger priorities in the middle of the park and central defence on the transfer side of things.
And with the transfer deadline fast approaching on February 3, it is highly unlikely that Daniel Levy will make a move for a new right-back at the moment, given how Ange also has Spence and Grey among the ranks.
