Tottenham tipped to part ways with Rodrigo Bentancur next summer
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has not had an ideal season by any means. The Uruguayan international was stretchered off with a head injury on the very first day of the season against Leicester City in the Premier League and earlier this month, he endured a similar scare and needed to be hospitalised during the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

Apart from the two setbacks with fitness, he also had to serve a suspension spanning across seven domestic matches imposed upon by the FA owing to a racial accusation made against teammate Son Heung-min. And though both teammates managed to settle the issue, England’s footballing body did not deem that enough to cancel out Bentancur’s suspension.
In that duration, the likes of Pape Mata Sarr and Yves Bissouma usurped him to become Ange Postecoglou’s preferred holding midfielders, while more recently, even Lucas Bergvall has been playing more minutes. That has seen Bentancur stay on the bench for longer than he would like, leading to John Wenham to urge Spurs into considering the midfielder’s sale.
He was quoted saying the following to Tottenham Hotspur News.
“Bergvall has exceeded all my expectations. Suddenly, we could be looking at the likes of Bentancur – who is out of contract in 2026 – and thinking about selling him in the summer because of the emergence of a player like Bergvall. I like Bentancur, but the constant injuries and suspensions have been difficult. As a result, he is somebody who we might look to move on as we think about long-term planning.”
Bergvall did not seem to have Postecoglou’s trust at the start of the campaign although that has changed now, and with Dejan Kulusevski’s ever-improving utility as a midfielder, it could be the right time for Spurs to let go of Bentancur. The club surely does not want to keep an ageing option in its squad, more so when he can walk out as a free agent shortly afterwards.

Bentancur’s services are unlikely to have a market in Europe, however, so the Saudi Arabian clubs and perhaps MLS and South American outfits might declare interest in his purchase during the summer.
