Postecoglou ready to hand rising attacking talent a Tottenham opportunity; rules out January exit

Tottenham have decided to keep Dane Scarlett at the club for the rest of the season

Tottenham Hotspur safely secured a passage to the Europa League Round of 16 by beating IF Elfsborg 3-0 at home on Thursday night.

Ange Postecoglou’s side laboured for much of the game, which remained 0-0 past the hour mark, before goals started flowing for the home side. Dane Scarlett, not long recalled from his loan spell with Championship side Oxford United, headed home from Dejan Kulusevski’s cross in the 70th minute—just moments after coming off the bench.

Fellow academy talent Damola Ajayi then doubled the North London outfit’s lead with a fine debut strike in the 84th minute. Then in injury time, Mikey Moore—another academy product—netted his first senior goal for Spurs with a superb finish low into the bottom-left corner.

Dane Scarlett’s loan spell at Oxford United was cut short at the start of January

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou faced the media after a comfortable night’s work against Elfsborg in the Europa League. When asked by the reporters when he decided that Dane Scarlett was staying at the club for the rest of the season, Postecoglou stated (h/t Football London):

“We had a look at his situation. He has had a couple of disappointing loans. I think sending him out again without any sort of real prospect of him developing, we just felt let’s keep him training with us and give him an opportunity to train with us and play with us and see how it goes.”

Dane Scarlett was Tottenham’s unlikely hero in every sense against Elfsborg in midweek. The youngster’s loan spell at Oxford United was cut short at the start of the month due to his lack of playing time—with the club’s intention to send him out on loan again.

That was made highly improbable after Postecoglou brought him on for the injured Radu Dragusin in the 66th minute. Players are not permitted to play for more than two clubs in a season, so another loan move switch was off as soon as Scarlett took to the pitch on Thursday night. And the 20-year-old made an instant impact in the game within four minutes after coming off the bench, scoring his first senior goal for Tottenham with a tidy header to break the deadlock.

Prior to his appearance off the bench against Elfsborg, the England youth international hadn’t played for the Lilywhites this campaign with his last outing coming on the final day of last season at Sheffield United in May. With forwards Dominic Solanke, Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson all out injured, the decision looks to be made to keep Scarlett in and around the first-team picture for the rest of the season.
