With just a couple of days for the winter transfer window to slam shut, Tottenham Hotspur fans have been largely left unhappy and frustrated with the lack of transfer activity.
Spurs have endured a torrid 2024/25 Premier League season and lie 15th in the table. Injuries and suspensions have had a devastating impact on them in recent months, seeing Ange Postecoglou’s slide to the bottom half of the table.
Back in the 2024 summer transfer window, the North Londoners strengthened their squad significantly, breaking their club-record transfer by signing Dominic Solanke in a £65 million deal from Bournemouth. The England international turned out to be Tottenham’s marquee signing of the summer window. Ange Postecoglou also added the likes of Timo Werner, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert to his ranks in what was a busy window for the Lilywhites.
However, the Australian tactician wanted to add a bit more depth to his squad but failed to do so. Tottenham certainly had funds to reinvest after selling Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, so it was once again down to chairman Daniel Levy’s determination to drive a hard bargain that led to some missed opportunities.

But what became of the players Tottenham missed out on last summer? We have checked in on three players that they reportedly targeted signing – and evaluated how they’ve fared since.
1. Eberechi Eze
Eberechi Eze had a gentleman’s agreement with Crystal Palace last summer that he would be allowed to leave for a fee in the region of €70 million. Tottenham were one of the several clubs interested in signing the England international, but they were hesitant to splash €70 million and as a result, a deal never materialised.
Eventually, Eberechi Eze ended up staying at Crystal Palace as coach Oliver Glasner was reluctant to lose him after the departures of Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen. Eze has been arguably Palace’s best player in the last couple of seasons. One of the exciting talents in Premier League football, the creative midfielder enjoyed his most productive season in 2023/24 with the Eagles with 11 Premier League goals in 27 appearances.
However, the same cannot be said in this campaign with injury problems largely hampering his progress. The English playmaker has played 19 times in the Premier League, registering five goals and two assists. Now, Eze has been ruled out for a few weeks due to an injury, with Glasner revealing that his star has “struggled in the last weeks and months” with knocks and bruises.
2. Trevoh Chalobah
Postecoglou wanted a strong, quick and ball-playing defender before the start of the season—you could say he still does given their injury crisis at the back—and Spurs were linked with Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah.

Trevoh Chalobah was considered a part of the ‘bomb squad’ at Chelsea—a group of nearly a dozen players exiled out of Enzo Maresca’s first team. The defender was informed last summer that he was surplus to requirements and was not a part of Maresca’s first-team plans at Stamford Bridge.
This led to Chalobah departing Chelsea for Crystal Palace, where he became a lynchpin at the back for Glasner’s side. The 25-year-old was a regular starter at Selhurst Park, clocking 14 appearances after making his Palace debut in October. However, the Blues decided to recall him from his loan spell at Palace last month in the wake of their injury problems, and Chalobah immediately proved his worth with a Man of the Match display in the 3-1 win over Wolves.
From being exiled at Stamford Bridge to becoming the best solution to shore up Maresca’s shaky defence, Chalobah has enjoyed quite an interesting six to eight months in his career.
3. Jonathan David
Tottenham went into the last summer transfer window trying to buy a natural No.9 to fill the gaping hole left by the legendary Harry Kane in 2023. At one point, they lead the race to sign LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David.
Despite having entered the final year of his contract, Lille demanded around €50m for Jonathan David which Spurs felt was unreasonable. Instead, the North Londoners went on to break their club record by signing Solanke from Bournemouth.

David, eventually, ended up staying put at Lille. The Canadian has been among the prolific goalscorers in Ligue 1 in recent years and has continued his fine form this season, netting 11 goals in 18 games. He has also been on fire in the Champions League with eight goals in 12 appearances.
Now into the final six months of his contract, the 25-year-old is eligible to pen a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club. However, it looks like Lille would rather risk losing their star striker on a free transfer at the end of his contract this summer than selling him for a paltry fee now, feeling there is more value in a £40m bounty for reaching next year’s Champions League.
David is poised to leave the Ligue 1 side on a free transfer at the end of the season—and Spurs could be in the mix vying for his signature then.
