In the final days of the January transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a central defender alongside a forward. Their pursuit for a defender comes in the wake of Radu Dragusin’s injury.

Dragusin was forced to come off in Thursday night’s Europa League win over IF Elfsborg with a knee injury. The Romanian international has been leading the defence for Ange Postecoglou’s side in Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero’s injury absence. While he has blown hot and cold over the last couple of months, the 22-year-old’s availability during the injury crisis was considered extremely vital.

However, Dragusin is now injured and has been ruled out of Spurs’ trip to Brentford on Sunday. With Cristian Romero still short of fitness and Micky van de Ven only making his return against Elfsborg in midweek after almost two months on the sidelines, Ange Postecoglou lacks options at the heart of the defence.

Postecoglou came out with the reasons that paved the way for the addition of Dragusin to the squad despite not being completely fit.

The Lilywhites are now prioritising the signing of a central defender. According to reliable Sky Italia reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, Tottenham have been pushing to sign AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori in the last few hours.

Aston Villa are also in the race, but Spurs are now the frontrunners for the defender’s signature. Negotiations between the two clubs are at an advanced stage. Di Marzio adds that the 27-year-old’s move to White Hart Lane is in the ‘final stages’ after the North Londoners tabled a €25.1 million plus five million in bonuses. However, the final decision remains with Fikayo Tomori as he has always expressed his desire to stay with AC Milan.

Tomori has made 163 appearances for Milan since leaving Chelsea in 2021, winning the Serie A title and an Italian Supercup thus far. However, this season hasn’t gone according to the script for the England international as he lost his starting berth under former manager Paulo Fonseca.

Despite being reintegrated into the side by new boss Sergio Conceicao, speculation over the versatile defender’s future continues to be rife. Spurs have been admirers of Tomori’s talents and are now looking to sign him in a bid to bolster their defensive options. He would be a solid option for the North Londoners, with his agility, pace and physicality allowing them to play a high defensive line with good effect.

At 27, Tomori is at the peak of his powers and should ideally make an immediate impact if signed. That being said, Spurs have done well to agree on a fee with Milan. The decision now remains up to the ex-Chelsea man as Tottenham fans wait with bated breath.
