Tottenham planning to battle for Sunderland talent Tom Watson
Tottenham Hotspur’s recruitment under Ange Postecoglou have been focused on signing young, hungry and dynamic talents with room to grow.
In the last few transfer windows, they have done well to sign the likes of Destiny Udogie, Pape Matar Sarr, Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Antonin Kinsky. And Spurs remain determined to enhance their pool of prodigious talents before the ongoing winter window slams shut.
According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham are interested in signing Sunderland youngster Tom Watson. Several Premier League clubs including Everton and Crystal Palace are also vying for his signature, with Brighton and Hove Albion having already seen an offer of around £2million rebuffed last week.

A product of the Sunderland academy, Tom Watson is on course for his breakout campaign in the senior side having made his debut in 2023. He has racked up 10 appearances so far this season, scoring two goals. The teenager made headlines after netting twice in Sunderland’s 2-1 win over Stoke City in December.
Watson has impressed with his pace, directness and unpredictability in the Championship, thereby, catching the eye of Premier League clubs including Spurs. The speedy winger has a contract at the Stadium of Light until 2026 (Transfermarkt) and Sunderland don’t want to lose him. However, given his dwindling contract, Premier League clubs have been put on red alert.
Spurs signed Odobert from Burnley last summer and they could raid the Championship again for another teenage prodigy in Watson. Yang Min-hyeok was recruited from South Korean club Gangwon FC in 2024 before he officially arrived at the club at the start of 2025. The South Korean talent has been loaned out to Queens Park Rangers for the remainder of the season to help him adapt to the fast-paced and physical needs of English football.

The Lilywhites could follow the same trick with Watson here; sign him now and immediately loan him back to Sunderland to continue his development. Watson has done a fine job playing for the Sunderland first team this season but he is still raw and has a lot of room for improvement. Getting regular minutes would help him improve, which he is unlikely to get under Ange Postecoglou now.

Thus, the Hotspur Way chiefs must try beating competition from Premier League rivals for the Sunderland talent’s signature. At 18, Watson would represent another sound, long-term investment for us.
