Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham have made contact with Aston Villa on Leon Bailey’s signing

Tottenham have made contact with Aston Villa over Leon Bailey

Tottenham Hotspur are not done yet in the January transfer window despite signing Kevin Danso from RC Lens last weekend.

Spurs have agreed a loan deal with Chelsea for Axel Disasi as they attempt to further bolster the defence after Danso’s acquisition, with Radu Dragusin suffering a serious-looking knee injury last week and Cristian Romero still absent.

The Lilywhites also have some of their attackers currently on the sidelines. With Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert and Timo Werner sidelined with injuries, Ange Postecoglou could do with a new forward before the transfer deadline. A new striker should be the priority after Solanke’s recent injury, but the club could also do with strengthening in wide areas of the pitch.

According to transfer news guru Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have contacted Aston Villa to enquire about Leon Bailey ahead of a potential swoop. However, as things stand, Aston Villa have no intention to let their winger leave the club on the transfer deadline day.

“What I can tell you is that Man United and Tottenham, both clubs called to be informed on Bailey,” Fabrizio Romano said in a video on his official YouTube channel.

“But again, it depends on Aston Villa and at the moment, there are still no open doors. We will see on deadline day what’s going to happen on that one.”

Aston Villa sold Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr last week. They have replaced Duran by signing Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United, while Marco Asensio is also set to join Unai Emery’s side on loan from Paris Saint-Germain for the remainder of the season.

Yet, the Villans are reluctant to let Leon Bailey leave the club amid interest from both Spurs and Man United. He is likely to drop down the pecking order under Emery at Villa Park following the arrivals of Donyell Malen and Marcus Rashford.

The Jamaican speedster has been plying his trade for Villa since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2021. The 27-year-old has been in and out of the team this season, making only three goal contributions in 20 Premier League games. He has a total of 21 goals in 135 appearances for the West Midlands side, but Bailey can do a good job in Tottenham’s attack.

Capable of playing in various attacking roles, Bailey will add speed, unpredictability, flair and dynamism to Ange Postecoglou’s side whilst covering for the presently injured Johnson. He is now a Premier League-proven commodity, so there would be expectations of him to hit the ground running should a move to White Hart Lane materialise. The ex-Bayer Leverkusen man could become a star at Tottenham under Big Ange.

However, the North Londoners don’t have much time left to persuade Villa, so our club’s chiefs must hurry up if we want to seal Bailey’s signature before today’s transfer deadline.
