BBC journalist backs Tottenham defender who was not in squad against Brentford to start vs Liverpool

Ange Postecoglou cannot get a hold of the injuries that the players in his roster have been suffering in the ongoing 2024/25 campaign, and now the Australian head coach has lost Radu Dragusin for the rest of the season with the Romanian centre-back suffering an ACL injury in the Lilywhites Europa League game last week.

However, in what will come as a boost for the North Londoners supporters, Dutch ace Micky van de Ven is “likely” to start for Spurs in their EFL Cup semi-final on Thursday.

Ironically, Tottenham welcomed Micky van de Ven just when they lost Dragusin. However, the former Wolfsburg was an absentee in the Lilywhites squad last weekend in their 2-0 win over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Van de Ven to start vs Liverpool?

Van de Ven is back from injury in what is a big boost for Tottenham.

And BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella took to BlueSky (via. Tottenham News) for snippets from Postecoglou’s press conference after the game, where the head coach gave an update on Van de Ven.

While Ange was looking to manage VDV’s minutes against the Bees, he is expected to be back in the starting lineup at Anfield later this week.

Postecoglou said (in quotes relayed by Kinsella):

“I think the club is still looking there for opportunities. We’re still a little bit thin defensively, I think. But Van de Ven is likely to start at Anfield.”

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

If there is a game that Ange wants his main man to play through, it is this one, one that will possibly also decide the Australian’s fate at White Hart Lane. Given that Van de Ven’s hamstring has been all over the place this season, it is important to manage his minutes and ensure that he gets back into his stride slowly and steadily—but there will be time for that, just not this Thursday.
