Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy had been vying for a move for a new forward in the ongoing transfer window given the much-needed depth and dynamism in the front line, and the North Londoners chairman did deliver, and in what style, bringing highly regarded Bayern Munich teenage sensation Mathys Tel to White Hart Lane.
While the discussions were about a vanilla loan, the Frenchman is moving to N17 on an initial loan deal with an option to buy. The Lilywhites made a late request to the German giants to include a probable buying option that was agreed upon by the player, his representatives, and both clubs. Now, Spurs hold a €55m option to land Tel on a possible 6-year contract in the upcoming summer transfer window.
How Tottenham humiliated Man Utd with Tel transfer

As Tottenham brings Tel with a buying option, they have gone and absolutely embarrassed Premier League rivals Manchester United, who walked away from a potential deal for Tel because a permanent buy-out option couldn’t be included in any deal that brought the 19-year-old to Old Trafford. And now Levy has gone and not only got his man but also got the option to make the transfer permanent.
While for Man United, they made two signings in the winter window as they brought in once-Spurs target Patrick Dorgu and young talent from Arsenal, Ayden Heaven.
Now, for Tottenham and the supporters at White Hart Lane, it’s about making Tel feel at home and ensuring that he gets firing from the get-go and brings the Lilywhites season on track.
