We got through deadline day, and there were deals flying everywhere, and while Tottenham Hotspur did their fair share of business, bringing in Mathys Tel to White Hart Lane on a loan deal yesterday, however, beyond their own deals, the North Londoners were delivered a massive disappointment by Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, given how their decision to shape up Marcus Edwards transfer will hand the Lilywhites a multimillion-pound blow.
Championship side Burnley signed Marcus Edwards, who was linked with a potential return to Hotspur Way. The deal is shaped forward as a loan move with an obligation to buy for an £8m fee, which is on the back of the Clarets success in the ongoing campaign.
Wenham breaks down Edwards move to Burnley

When Edwards moved to Sporting CP, the original contract included a 35 percent sell-on clause in the deal, per Football London; however, despite the clause, John Wenham, owner of the reputed Spurs podcast Lilywhites Rose, believes that the North Londoners are set to benefit financially from this sell-on clause anymore as a result of how Edwards’ move to Burnley has been structured.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, the podcast host said:
“Edwards has signed for Burnley. That deal was probably done in a way to cut Tottenham out of their 35 per cent sell-on clause. Therefore, they will be frustrated about that scenario. How that would have been done is Burnley would have paid a large loan fee, and that isn’t part of the sale of the player. It has been done that way so that Sporting keep the maximum amount of money and Tottenham miss out.
“That has been done on purpose, make no mistake about it.”
Edwards had been linked with a move to the Premier League just a year back and it did look like the 26-year-old would go on to join an elite club from Sporting Lisbon at some point, but that’s not the case now with him moving to Burnley, who are vying for a possible promotion to the English top tier with Scott Parker.
