Tottenham had a mammoth bid rejected by Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi
Tottenham Hotspur would have been happy with how transfer activity panned out in the final few days of the January transfer window.
The North Londoners managed to sign defender Kevin Danso on loan from RC Lens and forward Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, along with boosting the academy numbers with a couple of acquisitions. Tel’s signing on the transfer deadline day would have left the Spurs fans astonished, particularly after he had snubbed a chance to join the club last month.
The Hotspur Way chiefs also wanted to sign another centre-back after Danso’s addition in the wake of Radu Dragusin’s serious season-ending knee injury. They wanted Marc Guehi and also had tabled a bid, only for Crystal Palace to turn it down. Reports suggest Tottenham had presented a £70 million proposal for the centre-back, which Crystal Palace felt insufficient on the deadline day and rejected it.

Marc Guehi has been superb in a Palace shirt for a number of seasons now, establishing himself as one of the best in his position. Given his talent, high potential, leadership skills and experience, multiple Premier League clubs have been vying for the Eagles skipper’s signature in recent transfer windows.
The England international has been a rock at the back again for the South Londoners, netting three goals in 23 Premier League appearances thus far. Guehi is happy to stay at Selhurst Park, although he has only 18 months remaining on his contract (Transfermarkt). Thus, several clubs will be waiting in the wings to sign him in the summer.
TalkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist firmly believes Guehi would have been a sensational addition to Tottenham’s defensive roster, fitting perfectly into Ange Postecoglou’s system if he played in a back three.
“I tell you who would’ve been a great signing for them but you can totally understand Palace, Marc Guehi would’ve been a great signing for them,” Ally McCoist said on talkSPORT.
“I’ve thought about it and I’ve thought that would be a great signing in respect that I would change Tottenham’s shape if they sign Guehi and play the three centre-backs with two wider boys. I’m thinking it would suit Ange [Postecoglou] in the way that he plays.”

Guehi is a quality defender, having grown leaps and bounds in recent years at Palace. Spurs being willing to break the bank for a player who has only 18 months remaining on his contract further demonstrates that.

Daniel Levy went on to find an agreement with the chiefs at Selhurst Park over a possible move for the 24-year-old; however, it came as no surprise that Palace valued Guehi higher than £70 million as he is not only their best centre-back but also their captain. As the South Londoners have endured a serious upturn in form, their captain has been vital to their revival.

In Guehi, Tottenham would have got someone who not only knows the league in and out but also a leader. The Englishman has excelled in a flat back four and three-man defence for both Palace and England, so he would have been a solid fit under Big Ange at Spurs.
