Tottenham secured the loan signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day
There was a shock transfer development at Tottenham Hotspur on the deadline day.
Spurs were rejected by Mathys Tel earlier in the transfer window—despite agreeing a €60m transfer with Bayern Munich. The France youth international was coveted by several European clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester United, but neither of those could reach an agreement with Bayern Munich for the forward.
However, in a shock late twist on deadline day, the Lilywhites secured the loan signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern. A deal was completed shortly after the deadline, with Tottenham having paid an initial loan fee of €10m to bring the teenage prodigy to White Hart Lane.

TV commentator and pundit Ian Darke feels Tottenham will have been surprised by Tel’s initial rejection to join them. However, he predicted the transfer reviving and believes the young forward will get plenty of playing opportunities at Spurs despite the competition for places under Ange Postecoglou, especially when Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson return from injury problems.
“I was surprised when Tel initially rejected Tottenham because he’s leaving Bayern Munich to get playing time. A lot of transfers that are originally off can switch again as this one has,” Ian Darke exclusively told Tottenham News.
“He needs to be somewhere where he’s going into the team, and I’m pretty sure he’ll get a lot of games at Spurs.
“He can play out wide or as a 10 as well, so even when Solanke comes back I think Tel can fit in.”

Perhaps Tel will immediately be positioned as Tottenham’s No.9 while Solanke is out, a move that would come at the expense of Richarlison, who’s only just returned from injury to the first XI himself.
Interestingly for Spurs fans, our club legend Harry Kane endorsed a move to Tottenham as admitted by the Frenchman himself. A young forward, Tel seems desperate for regular minutes after falling down the pecking order at Bayern under Vincent Kompany this season. Looking at his flexibility, Postecoglou would be wise to deploy him off the left and through the middle as a No.9 when required.

It will be intriguing to see whether our new signing can set the world alight from day one.
