Tottenham have paid an eye-watering €10m loan fee to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich
Tottenham Hotspur Ange Postecoglou and chairman Daniel Levy had been vying for a move for a new forward all January transfer window. Finally, Daniel Levy did deliver, securing the loan signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on the deadline day.
Mathys Tel, who was linked with several Premier League clubs after deciding to leave Bayern Munich due to lack of minutes, had chosen Manchester United as his favoured destination with prominent game time likely to be rewarded at Old Trafford due to Marcus Rashford and Antony’s loan departures. But in a shock late twist, the French forward opted to join Spurs—and a deal was completed shortly after the deadline.
It was reported by reputable The Athletic journalist David Ornstein that the North London club had agreed on an option to sign Mathys Tel permanently for £45.7m in the summer, but this information has now been contradicted by a top German reporter.

Sports Bild reporter Christian Falk has now claimed that the figures reported by the British media outlets are not accurate. On his official X account, Falk suggests that Tottenham have paid an initial loan fee of €10m to bring Tel to White Hart Lane. The North Londoners have covered the teenage prodigy’s full salary until the end of the season, with a €60 option to buy him in the summer.
As per another German journalist, Kerry Hau from Sky Sports, Spurs option to buy option will turn into an obligation to buy the France youth international if he plays a certain number of games before the end of the season.
There is one condition attached to the deal—the Premier League side can only sign Tel permanently from Bayern if the player agrees to join. Hau adds the structuring of the deal has been made in such a way that the versatile forward will have to agree in the summer for the permanent option to become active.

Paying potentially €70m (€60m in the summer+€10m loan fee) for a 19-year-old who is yet to prove himself at the highest level is certainly a major gamble taken by the Hotspur Way chiefs.
Tel is rated highly across Europe and obviously also within Tottenham, which led to them paying a huge loan fee for just four months. However, if viewed from another angle, it also reeks of desperation from Levy and Co. that led to the club taking a big chance on a forward who hasn’t scored for Bayern this season. A lack of proper planning led to no choice but to go for the player on deadline day to address the lack of numbers in Big Ange’s forward department.
