Mathys Tel

The recent Premier League transfer window lacked excitement, with Aston Villa, Manchester City, and the North London club dominating the market. Due the ongoing injury crisis, Tottenham secured several bargain signings, but the standout arrival was Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.

Tel completed a loan move to Spurs on deadline day, with an option to buy. In a dramatic last-minute twist, he changed his stance and agreed to join Tottenham in the final hours of the window.

It initially seemed like Tottenham would only secure Mathys Tel on loan, but by the end of the transfer window, but was confirmed later on that he had agreed to an option to buy.

If Tel stays beyond this season, he will sign a six-year deal with Spurs. However, Dean Jones, speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, suggests this is not guaranteed. According to Jones, there’s a sense that Tel isn’t entirely keen on leaving Bayern Munich, and even if he performs well at Spurs, he might look for a return to Bavaria.

Tel hesitant about permanent Tottenham move

While Mathys Tel’s move to Tottenham is widely seen as one of the standout transfers of the winter window, it’s important to remember that the 19-year-old is under significant pressure. Dean Jones shared his insights on Tel’s situation after the move, revealing that although Spurs are keen for the deal to become permanent, the player isn’t fully convinced about leaving Bayern Munich.

Jones explained that despite initial plans for a dry loan, Tottenham still aimed to make the transfer permanent and would work over the coming months to convince Tel that Spurs is the right place for him. However, Jones also noted that Tel doesn’t seem entirely eager to leave Bayern, and even if he excels at Tottenham, he may still harbour aspirations of returning to Munich.

The Journalist speaking on the latest Ranks Fc podcast, shared his view on the Tel situation

“I have to admit, I still feel like the player doesn’t fully want to leave Bayern Munich, and even if he does really well here at Tottenham, he might see it as, well, if I do really well, I can play for Bayern Munich again. “

“So maybe I’m being cynical about that, but I get that impression. He didn’t really want this transfer to happen, did he?”

“It was only when Man United pulled out that it came back on the table because he wanted to go there.”
