Revealed – Why did AC Milan defender reject a move to Tottenham in winter window?

published :

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy were scrapping to bring in a new centre-back in the recently concluded winter transfer window, with the North Londoners dealing with a lot of injuries in the position through the ongoing 2024/25 campaign, and the Lilywhites did make persistent efforts to bring in highly regarded AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori to White Hart Lane.

And despite Levy reaching an agreement with AC Milan, Tomori ultimately declined the move to Spurs, and his decision was on the back of his past connections with the Lilywhites’ London rivals Chelsea, a place where he took first steps in his professional career, per Tuttomercatoweb.

Pivot to Danso

And while Tottenham were disappointed with Tomori not moving to N17, they didn’t stay low for long with the Premier League heavyweights redirecting their focus to land Lens defender Kevin Danso. The chiefs at Hotspur Way managed to successfully secure a loan deal for the 26-year-old complemented with an obligation to buy for €25 million.

Danso’s arrival at White Hart Lane will be widely celebrated given how his signing was followed by a season-ending ACL injury to Radu Dragusin, and now the Austrian defender will be thrown into the thick of things starting with Spurs all-important game against Liverpool in the second leg of the EFL Cup at Anfield Stadium later today.

It’s an opportunity missed for Tomori

Looking at this from Tottenham’s perspective, bringing in Danso and reacting quickly to the disappointment of losing out on Tomori shows Daniel Levy’s commitment to planning for backup options and ensuring that he hands a strong roster to Ange Postecoglou.

And given how Tottenham was eager to secure Tomori, his loyalty to Chelsea ultimately went on to influence his decision to remain at AC Milan, and he lost an opportunity to be a feature in one of the Premier League’s big six sides.

As for Danso, hopefully he integrates well into the squad and finds his feet from the get-go.
