Tottenham Hotspur have been playing without their first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for a while given his long-term spell on the sidelines; however, what will come as a big boost for Ange Postecoglou is that the Italian international is on the verge of making a return to action.
According to ever-reliable insider Paul O’Keefe, the former Empoli goalkeeper is said to be “very close” to rejoining the roster at White Hart Lane.
Vicario will need to regain his fitness ‘behind the scenes’

There were a bit of speculations suggesting that Vicario might make a surprise comeback before Tottenham’s 2-0 Premier League win against Brentford in the London Derby; however, winter signing Antonin Kinsky continued to start for the North Londoners. And now while there are suggestions that Vicario could near a return, former Spurs scout Bryan King believes that the 28-year-old will likely feature in behind-the-scenes friendly games before making his way into first-team fixtures.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, King said:
“I’d imagine, that if Vicario is going to make a return soon, he has obviously played in behind-closed-doors matches at some stage. I can’t see him coming straight back in without playing a couple of games. Therefore, I’d think that Spurs have arranged in the last week or so a game or two for Vicario to play in, to see how he is.
“When he is fit, I’d expect him to come back into the team. However, before they can consider his return, he will need to have played games behind the scenes at the training ground. They can’t just throw him straight back in.”
Competition with Kinsky
While Tottenham supporters await a return for Vicario, the youngster in goal at the moment, Antoin Kinsky, has played brilliantly and ensured that the Italian’s absence isn’t felt. This now adds a layer of complications to getting Vicario back; the 28-year-old will not only have to get fit but also prove himself for the number one spot, or he could end up losing his place to the Czech starlet.
However, competition breeds excellence—we have seen that at a lot of clubs in the English top tier, and Ange Postecoglou deserves a bit of quality and depth in one position, given how he had to make do with makeshift changes in the majority of the positions along the ongoing season.
