Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi had emerged as a surprise target for Tottenham Hotspur on the deadline day, with Daniel Levy putting on chips in the Chelsea academy graduate basket with a £70 million bid to attain his signature. And while the Liltwhites push to bring him to White Hart Lane ended up being unsuccessful in the recently concluded window, former scout Mick Brown insists that the North Londoners will likely return to sign the 24-year-old at the end of the season.
While speaking about how Guehi’s stock has been rising off late given how he has established himself with the Eagles as one of the best defenders in the English top tier, putting in consistent performances at the top level and earning regular call-ups to the Three Lions squad, Brown insists he would be an ideal candidate at Hotspur Way given the dire need to strengthen the defensive aspects of the roster at N17.
Tottenham to return for Guehi?

Now focusing on the offer, the rejection of Spurs offer was not only because it was a bid too low; it was more because of the timing of the bid, given how the North Londoners made a bid on the deadline day, leaving Palace with no time to find a potential replacement. And by the looks of it, Spurs may end up returning to sign Guehi when the summer transfer window comes around.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, Brown said:
“I expect they’ll revisit that offer in the summer; they won’t give up. Guehi is a wanted man; Newcastle wanted him last summer, and now Tottenham are after him. Tottenham needs a centre-back, and he’s the ideal option there.
“He’s as stable as there is at the back; he’s a regular starter for England now, and he can go under the radar at times at Crystal Palace. He plays at a solid level every week and is consistently impressive, so a few clubs have been looking at him.
“Palace rejected their offer not because of the fee but because of the timing of it, which I understand completely; it’s a perfectly reasonable stance for them to take. But in the summer, that could change, and I think Tottenham will come back in with a new offer.”

For Tottenham and Postecoglou (if he is still in the job in the off-season), adding a player of Guehi’s calibre will help to significantly raise the level of the defensive unit. But it is to be seen if Levy pursues him in the summer and if any other club vying for his signature offers him Champions League football (which looks highly unlikely for next season at Tottenham).
