Tottenham were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Liverpool on Thursday night
Tottenham Hotspur’s quest to reach the Carabao Cup final came to a hugely disappointing end as Liverpool won 4-1 on aggregate.
Spurs had a real chance of lifting silverware in Ange Postecoglou’s second season in North London, taking a 1-0 lead into the second leg of their Carabao Cup clash at Anfield. The expectation from the fans was that the players would put up a fight in trying to get over the line.
Instead, the Lilywhites were awful in all departments against a rampant Liverpool side, who ripped Ange Postecoglou and Co. apart via goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk. The scoreline could have been a lot uglier had goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky not pulled off a few outstanding saves on Thursday night.

After the game, Ange Postecoglou shared a few lessons he learnt from the painful loss at the hands of Liverpool. He conceded that Tottenham missed a great opportunity to play the Carabao Cup final and must make amends with a top performance against Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.
“It’s disappointing. It was a great opportunity for us to get to a final. We didn’t give ourselves a chance to take the opportunity which is probably more disappointing. Ultimately, it’s an opportunity for further learning and for us to atone for that by making amends with a strong performance on Sunday,” the Spurs boss told Football London.
Tottenham were sent tumbling out of the Carabao Cup in the worst possible fashion. No shot on target registered during the entire 90 minutes is a damning indictment of how toothless Big Ange’s side were going forward.

The performance from our boys at Anfield was nothing but utterly embarrassing—errors, poor decision-making, lack of leadership, fight, grit and motivation ultimately cost us the game. Across the pitch, barely any Tottenham player showed a bit of character and pride on the night. We were outplayed, outclassed and outworked in every department by a relentless Liverpool side, who totally deserved the win.

Big Ange once again had several key players missing for a crucial game, but the fact is that the players who were on the pitch on Thursday night didn’t show any quality, hunger, passion and desire to win and qualify for the competition’s showpiece event. With the team now dumped out of the Carabao Cup, our chances of silverware lie on how far we go in the FA Cup and Europa League.
