Ange Postecoglou optimistic about permanent swoop for Tottenham loanee Mathys Tel
Tottenham Hotspur have acquired Mathys Tel on loan for the next six months of the 2024/25 season but as part of their agreement with Bayern Munich, they also hold the option to make the transfer permanent in the summer for £50 million. While many believe that Tel has chosen the Lilywhites as a temporary gig to gain minutes after rejecting them the first time, others feel he is built for them.
Ange Postecoglou particularly thinks so as he was quoted saying the following on the 19-year-old’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (via Sky Sports).
“He will play a significant part in our end to the season for sure and beyond. He wants to make an impact and I expect him to do that. He will be a Tottenham player. I think he will show everyone he will be a Tottenham player in the next six months. I didn’t bring him here for six months.”

Though Postecoglou already looks very convinced by Tel’s qualities, there is a long way to go before deciding whether or not to make the deal permanent. The board of directors will be particularly mindful and have a close eye on the player’s output in the final third, as well as his fitness record, before footing a reasonable amount on his capture in addition to a long-term wage liability.
It also remains to be seen if the Frenchman sees himself at Spurs beyond the remainder of the season as playing in the Champions League and winning silverware is undoubtedly going to be one of his priorities, so in some ways, a move to the Premier League side might actually be seen as a downward step in comparison to Bayern Munich, where a change in managers in the summer could help his push of wanting to play more minutes.

Lastly, even if a permanent move elsewhere were to be on the player’s mind, he could have a number of other options in the Premier League itself with Chelsea and Manchester United among those declaring interest in Tel prior to his swoop to Spurs.
