Report: Tottenham Hotspur’s summer plans hinge on one ambitious signing

Mathys Tel set to influence Tottenham summer transfer plans

Tottenham Hotspur brought in a young superstar in the final hours of the winter transfer window in the shape of Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel. He is a vital addition to Ange Postecoglou’s underperforming cavalry with Spurs having to foot his salary of £80,000 per week in addition to bearing a loan fee that may rise to £8 million subject to completion of certain conditions.

Apart from their liabilities towards Bayern in the shorter run, Spurs also have the option of making the signing permanent for a fee estimated to be £50 million, which they are already hoping to exercise in the summer. The Athletic has claimed that the Lilywhites’ offensive rebuild could significantly hinge on whether or not Tel opts in favour of joining them later in the year.

Likewise, Postecoglou also will have to get the best produce from the French teenager in the final third to determine whether or not he would be a worthy addition on a permanent basis. If things pan out well, Tel would be a superb acquisition by Tottenham Hotspur with the ability to contribute to their first team for the next decade, if not longer.

Tottenham Hotspur slammed by journalist for links to Bayern Munich starlet Mathys Tel.

However, to plan for the entirety of the summer based on just one player, who is aged 19, is simply Tottenham repeating their past mistakes which have been widely criticised so many times. Ideally, they must be looking into signing at least two more attackers, one of whom needs to a natural left winger and another, a left-footed right winger to provide some dynamism apart from Brennan Johnson.

And though Tottenham are taking Tel’s purchase for granted at the moment, they must also consider the fact that the player will have several more options in the summer, including from clubs who are winning silverware regularly and playing in the Champions League. Therefore, their approach hints at being overambitious without having the willingness to spend the right sums on a squad rebuild.
