Top five Tottenham Hotspur wins under Ange Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou took over as the Tottenham Hotspur coach at the start of the 2023/24 season and has brought about a fresh ray of hope within the club’s fanbase. The Australian could finally be the man to land them to their first piece of silverware in over 15 years, while a Champions League berth could await next year too as Spurs remain one of the favourites to win the Europa League as well.

They have had their fair share of lacklustre results, none more unexpected ones than defeats to Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town, in recent weeks although a top four finish also remains very much on the cards. They have made good progress in the Carabao Cup too, knocking out Manchester City in the process, while the FA Cup will also start soon and will be a competition Postecoglou takes seriously.

Postecoglou’s career at Tottenham has not been free from setbacks, whether those have been as a result of the team’s form or other enforced factors like injuries but that’s not to say that the fans have turned their backs on him. He remains a popular figure in north London and with good reason, so keeping that in mind, here is a look at the team’s five best victories under the former Celtic boss.

1. 2-0 win over Man United at home

Ange Postecoglou’s official debut as the Tottenham Hotspur coach came against Brentford in the Premier League on away soil. The Lilywhites were held to a 2-2 draw as he came under pressure very early on in his career, with many fans and pundits believing that he would not be a worthy replacement for the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, who seemingly failed at Hotspur Way in spite of their widespread success elsewhere in the sport.

A week later, however, Postecoglou’s Tottenham side which was without Harry Kane convincingly beat Manchester United 2-0 at home. It was the manager’s first date in front of his own supporters and a vital result for the team early in the season on matchday two of 2023/24. Pape Mata Sarr was on target for the hosts in the first half before Lisandro Martinez’s goal in the second period secured victory over the Red Devils.

2. 2-1 win over Man City in the Carabao Cup

Tottenham Hotspur overcame Manchester City in the Carabao Cup some weeks ago in what was a massive result for them. Timo Werner and Pape Mata Sarr were on target as Ange Postecoglou’s men defeated Pep Guardiola’s heavily rotated Manchester City team. Matheus Nunes pulled a goal back after Spurs went 2-0 up but a spirited second half display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium gave the home side a very hard-fought victory.

Postecoglou described the result as his ‘best win at Spurs’ and rightly so, as it could go a long way in influencing their season. Though the Carabao Cup remains a competition they can win in 2025, the 2-1 win over Manchester City will have given Tottenham hope that they have it in them to defeat the best sides in the world. The game was a well-balanced show of efficient attacking and pragmatic defending, so Postecoglou deserves his due diligence for the tactical approach as well.

3. 4-1 thumping of Aston Villa

Just a few days after earning a laborious win against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Tottenham Hotspur hosted Aston Villa in the Premier League. Unai Emery’s side has been a revelation this season and has grabbed some great results, one of which was a win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League. The former Arsenal boss is extremely astute from a tactical standpoint, so Spurs needed to be at the top of their game to beat the Clarets, especially as they have it in them to be a top-four side too.

Morgan Rogers gave the visitors the lead before half-time but Dominic Solanke led Tottenham’s demolition job in the second period. Brennan Johnson equalised within four minutes of the restart before Solanke notched a brace in quick succession to secure the points. James Maddison completed the rout in stoppage time with a beautiful free-kick past Emiliano Martinez. Though the win did not come against a ‘top six’ side per se, it was a brilliant performance from the team.

4. 3-0 win against Man United at Old Trafford

Tottenham Hotspur visited Manchester United earlier this season in the Premier League and walked away with a rather comfortable win against Erik ten Hag’s hapless side. The Lilywhites were all over the Red Devils as goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke gave them an easy win at Old Trafford. It was a stunning performance without Son Heung-min and the result could have been an even heavier win for Tottenham were it not for some poor finishing by Timo Werner.

It was one of the several matches that compounded the pressure on Ten Hag and resulted in his firing. United have appointed Ruben Amorim as their head coach and his test against Spurs will be in the final days of 2024. The two teams are set to face each other in the Carabao Cup and having dispatched aside one team from Manchester already, Postecoglou will look to orchestrate Tottenham’s second victory of the campaign over the Red Devils in all competitions.

5. 5-2 success against Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur have scored five goals in a match only once under Ange Postecoglou so far and it came at Turf Moor in last season’s matchday four clash against Burnley in the Premier League. Vincent Kompany’s side took an early lead through Lyle Foster but a Son Heung-min hat-trick and one strike apiece from Cristian Romero and James Maddison sealed the three points for the visitors. Joshua Brownhill scored another goal for Burnley in the second half but that was merely a consolation.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

It has indeed been a significant while since the Lilywhites have earned a thumping win in the Premier League, though you would expect a result of that sort to come soon given that Brennan Johnson, Dominic Solanke and Son Heung-min are all playing well and finally clicking with one another. What has been your favourite performance by Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou?
