Ange Postecoglou had been screaming for a new centre back from the previous summer window, and the Australian head coach got his wish in the recently concluded January transfer interval, where Daniel Levy brought in Austrian defender Kevin Danso on an initial loan deal with the Lilywhites holding an obligation to make his signature permanent in the off-season.
Tottenham Hotspur have endured massively in the absence of their two key cogs at the heart of defence, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, both of whom have served on the sidelines for the majority of the ongoing 2024/25 season. This forced the former Celtic manager to slot in makeshift changes at the back given the lack of options at his disposal.
Why did Tottenham sign Danso?

While the North Londoners were interested in signing some of the biggest names in European football when it comes to the defensive aspects of the game, Justin Lange made a surprising move by bringing in the 26-year-old from Lens.
And the Lilywhites technical director insists that Danso is a signing that fits the style of play that Postecoglou has deployed at White Hart Lane. Moreover, the Austrian international has enough experience under his belt amid his current age, where he is preparing to walk into his peak years. He also concludes by giving his fourth reason for signing Danso, claiming that the former Southampton ace has a personality that can go on to play an important part behind the scenes going forward.
Discussing signing Danso on The Spurs Play, the Dane said:
“Yeah, the stylistic fit is always important. The way we play we need players who are able to come in and perform within that style. Kevin, of course, as you say, is a very good stylistic fit but also he comes in with a lot of experience, both in the Bundesliga and in the Ligue 1 in France, as well as from the Austrian national team.
“He comes in at a good age with the experience to come in and take a role from the first day. Getting to know him more and more I’m sure that his personality will play a huge factor in the dressing room going forward.”

Danso made his debut donning the Lilywhites badge against Liverpool at Anfield yesterday, and while he had a decent outing winning all of his ground duels, it was a scoreline to forget. Hopefully his performances go on to make a name for himself at White Hart Lane.
