Barcelona threaten to derail Tottenham Hotspur interest in Jonathan David

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou secured fresh firepower on winter transfer deadline day, with Mathys Tel joining Bayern Munich on an initial loan which includes an option to buy for £45million. The Frenchman followed goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and defender Kevin Danso in joining the Lilywhites.

However, there were several forwards Spurs were linked with before Tel’s arrival, one of those being LOSC Lille’s Jonathan David.

Jonathan David has been one of LOSC Lille’s best players since he joined them from Belgian club Gent in 2020. He has been a prolific goalscorer for the French side, scoring over 100 goals. The striker has continued his fine form this season with 12 goals in 19 Ligue 1 appearances so far.

The Canadian international was hugely coveted by several European clubs during the recently concluded January transfer window, however, he chose to stay at Lille and perhaps secure a big move in the summer when he becomes a free agent (Transfermarkt).

Now, according to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are fearful of missing out on Jonathan David as he could be set to move elsewhere when his contract expires at Lille in the summer. There is a growing belief that the 25-year-old centre-forward has already made progress ahead of potentially joining another club at the end of the season.

David is reportedly in advanced talks with Barcelona as he aims to achieve his dream move to Camp Nou. He is keen to embark on a fresh challenge after spending five years with Lille, and despite interest from several Premier League clubs including Spurs and West Ham, the North American has set his heart on a potential switch to Barcelona.

Tottenham chiefs are worried about the prospect of losing out on the Canada striker’s signature. They were given the chance to profit from his contract situation at Lille, and had the North Londoners pounced on it, they could have landed David on a cut-price deal in January.

Missing out on the ex-Gent man’s services will be a big blow for Tottenham, considering his rise in stature as a prolific goalscorer in Ligue 1 and European leagues. Not only has the Brooklyn native scored goals in the French league but he has also scored six goals in eight Champions League games this season, helping Lille qualify for the automatic knockout rounds.

David would be an ideal replacement for the injury-prone Richarlison, who has been subject to aggressive links with a return to Everton in the summer. Nonetheless, Daniel Levy and Co. have made a big blunder by not going for David in the recently concluded January transfer window and could pay a big price in the summer as he looks to fulfil his dream move of joining Barcelona.
