Tottenham had a stronger transfer window than most teams, securing three new signings to strengthen their injury-hit squad. With Ange Postecoglou under increasing pressure, the club needed reinforcements. Mathys Tel made a last-minute U-turn on deadline day, ultimately agreeing to join Tottenham on loan after initially rejecting the move. However, Bayern Munich didn’t secure the terms they had hoped for in the deal.

According to Duncan Castles on The Transfers Podcast, Bayern initially planned to sell Mathys Tel in January and pushed for an obligation-to-buy clause in the loan deal. However, for various reasons, that didn’t materialise. Despite the setback, Tel still made his debut for Tottenham, and while the team suffered a loss, his individual performance was far from poor.
Bayern Munich wanted to sell the youngster
Duncan Castles shared insights on Mathys Tel’s loan move to Tottenham, revealing that Bayern Munich initially aimed to sell the striker in January but had to settle for a loan deal instead.
Castles highlighted that Manchester United showed interest but backed away due to Bayern’s high loan fee demands. Tel originally turned down Tottenham, as confirmed by Ange Postecoglou, who stated the player took time to assess whether it was the right move for his ambitions.
However, from Bayern’s perspective, they pushed for an obligation-to-buy clause worth €60 million. In the end, Tel insisted on having the final say on his future, leading to an option-to-buy clause instead.
Bayern Munich were not only eager to sell Mathys Tel in the January transfer window but are also disappointed that they couldn’t secure a permanent transfer.
According to Christian Falk, writing for The Daily Briefing, the German club is frustrated that they failed to offload the French forward on a full-time deal.
“Bayern would have liked to have sold Mathys Tel in the January transfer window. In fact, they were very disappointed that, at the last moment, Tel said, ‘No’ to a permanent move to Tottenham,”

Tottenham managed to secure an option to buy Tel as part of the loan deal, keeping the door open for a permanent move. If Spurs decide to make it official, the young forward will sign a six-year contract. However, whether that deal materialises in the summer is still uncertain.
