Tottenham signed Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich on January deadline day with an option to buy
Highly-rated talent Mathys Tel joined Tottenham Hotspur on January transfer deadline day on loan from Bayern Munich.
The France under-21 international made a dramatic U-turn on the final day of the transfer window as he agreed to sign for the Lilywhites, having initially snubbed the chance to embark on a fresh challenge with Ange Postecoglou’s side. The Greek-Australian tactician even made a phone call to convince the young forward to make the late switch to White Hart Lane from Bayern Munich.
Initially, it looked like Spurs would only sign Mathys Tel on loan, but, at the end of the day, it emerged that he had agreed an option to buy which stands at around €60m. They also had to bear a €10m loan fee to sign the teenage prodigy, whilst covering his full salary until the end of the season.

While many feel Tel has chosen Spurs as a temporary destination to gain regular minutes and regain his mojo, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou feels otherwise. The 59-year-old is optimistic about the French forward joining Tottenham permanently.
However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has now given an update on Tel’s future at Spurs. He has stated that the 19-year-old’s move could depend on how his loan spell pans out. Even though the North London club will likely wish to activate that in the summer, it is uncertain whether the forward will accept.
“It depends. The buy option clause can only be activated if the player approves too, I’m sure Spurs have good chances but of course, it depends on how these months will go… it’s not something guaranteed, but possible yes,” Fabrizio Romano exclusively told GIVEMESPORT.
Tel, who has 16 goals in 83 games for Bayern since arriving from Rennes in 2021, fell down the pecking order under Vincent Kompany this season. The teenage prodigy’s majority of appearances came from the bench, with no goals scored. This led to him leaving the Bavarian giants and joining Tottenham on loan.

Big Ange has to get the best out of Tel in the coming months to determine whether or not he would be a worthy addition to Tottenham’s attacking ranks on a permanent basis. If things pan out well, the ex-Rennes trainee would be a sensational long-term acquisition for the North Londoners with the ability and potential to contribute to their first team for the next decade, if not longer.
