Spurs set for showdown talks with Postecoglou
Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou’s position remains delicate after their humiliation in the Carabao Cup semi-final at the hands of Liverpool. In typically expected fashion, an injury-ridden side threw away a one-goal advantage from the first leg to get thrashed by a 4-0 scoreline in the second bout at Anfield last week.
However, not much was said of the result and Spurs’ performance as they turned their attention to the FA Cup the next morning. The Lilywhites face Aston Villa in the fourth round of England’s premier cup competition later on Sunday with speculation rising that elimination at the hands of Unai Emery’s men could spell the end for Postecoglou in north London.
It has been reported that there are going to be ‘crisis talks’ held at Hotspur Way in the coming week as Paul Robinson said the following to Tottenham Hotspur News.
“They’re out of the EFL Cup, and they could be out of the FA Cup on Sunday if they play like they did against Liverpool. The conversation about Ange’s future really starts to heat up next week. They’ve got no chance of getting Champions League football. If they get knocked out of the FA Cup, take away the Europa League, and this season has been terrible. A week is a long time in football so I hope the conversation is different after a resounding win against Aston Villa. It’s not only season-defining but the pressure is going to mount on Postecoglou even more.”
If Spurs live to fight another day in the FA Cup, Postecoglou is unlikely to be shown the door as Daniel Levy will also be intent on keeping the manager until the end of the season unless things start to unravel more than they already have. Moreover, one of the reasons why the Australian has probably not been sacked yet is because the club is trying to save its severance liability towards him.
In the event of a win against Aston Villa, the ‘crisis talks’ might be more of a conversation that sees the board transmit confidence to Postecoglou for what remains of the campaign. It is extremely unlikely to fancy Spurs going all the way in the FA Cup, however, so their Europa League season may be the only saving grace with the Premier League realistically a lost cause already.

If indeed Postecoglou is fired following a potential defeat at Aston Villa’s hands, it will be interesting to see who ends up being appointed as his replacement for the longer run though a familiar face in Ryan Mason might take over in the interim.
