‘Under control’- Fabrizio Romano provides Ange Postecoglou sack update at Tottenham

published :

Tottenham have once again been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons after exiting the Carabao Cup last night.

In what was arguably one of their biggest games of the season, Spurs relinquished their 1-0 goal advantage from the first leg and slumped to a 4-0 defeat.

And so, criticism has returned for Postecoglou, with many asking once again how long will it be before club chairman Daniel Levy pulls the trigger.

In his recent GiveMeSport newsletter entry, football journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Spurs’ stance over Ange Postecoglou has not changed after last night’s defeat against Liverpool.

“I don’t have any message on potential sack or surprises. The situation remains under control at the moment.”

Pressure mounts on the 59-year-old once again after Tottenham’s best shot at silverware so far this season came to an end last night. That said, the Lilywhites remain in the FA Cup and the Europa League, having directly qualified to the latter’s Round of 16. In the former, they face Aston Villa this Sunday in hopes of keeping their trophy hopes for the season alive.

The pressure on Postecoglou to deliver a trophy to Spurs has only increased in recent months after his “I win in my second season” comments. Tottenham famously haven’t won a competitive tournament since winning the 2007/08 League Cup.

TTLB Opinion

Those who follow football closely knows exactly where the Spurs-Postecoglou marriage is headed. It’s a matter of when and not if at this point.

While it’s theoretically possible, one fails to see how Spurs win a trophy in their current predicament, for while they’d need to put their strongest team on the pitch for all their cup games, they’d also need to make sure the bottom doesn’t open up under them in the Premier League as they get sucked into a late relegation dogfight, which as things stand is not inconceivable.

Tottenham fans desperately want a trophy, but they’d also not want that trophy to be the Championship title. A careful juggling act needs to follow from Postecoglou for the coming games, and it will be interesting to see what he chooses to go with.
