The €100 million question: Will Tottenham break the bank for Colombian maestro?

published :

Ange Postecoglou has been trying to add dynamism and unpredictability while maintaining mobility at the heart of the park for a while now, and while Tottenham Hotspur targeted multiple players to fill in this role at White Hart Lane, none of those moves materialised, and now Daniel Levy has his heart set on bringing in some Colombian magic to the roster as Spurs eye a move for Richard Rios.

The roster at Hotspur Way lacks numbers in the midfield following the departure of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovanni Lo Celso in the previous summer window, complemented by the club’s failure to replace the duo.

The Lilywhites are regarded as favourites in their pursuit of landing his signature and will continue pushing to sign him, given how they did try to bring him to Hotspur Way in the recently concluded winter transfer window, per Caughtoffside.

Rios has quality but Palmeiras are in a position of power

Richard Rios among the midfield options considered at N17.

The Colombian midfielder’s influence with his current employers, complemented by his recently extended contract, means Palmeiras are in a position of power when it comes to any negotiations for the 24-year-old. Rios has built up a reputation for being a technical presence with elegant vision and composure on the ball, and his skill set could end up being a valuable addition to Postecoglou’s midfield.

However, his new contract, which runs on till 2028, does have a €100m release clause.

For Tottenham, it is highly unlikely that Daniel Levy will pay out that release clause to land the Colombian, but they can at least try to test the waters with significant bids when the summer transfer window comes around.
