Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a summer move for Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams
Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a solid January transfer window as Ange Postecoglou managed to add four new players to his squad, including South Korean talent Yang Min-hyeok, whose arrival from Gangwon FC was agreed as early as last summer.
Antonin Kinsky, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel were the other three acquisitions as the Lilywhites look to work their way through an injury crisis. With Spurs already knocked out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, the Europa League is Ange Postecoglou’s only shot at winning a trophy this season.
The pressure on the Greek-Aussie tactician has shot up after back-to-back eliminations from domestic cup competitions last week, combined with the team’s position in the Premier League, but the board are still sticking with him. They remain hopeful that the team will perform better and start picking up results in the Premier League once the injured players start returning to the squad.

Meanwhile, it appears the Hotspur Way chiefs behind the scenes are already planning for the 2025/26 season. According to a report from The Athletic, Tottenham are among a host of clubs keeping tabs on Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. Spurs’ Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are also keen on the Spaniard, who is now ‘more open’ to a summer move to England.
Tottenham have had a long-standing admiration for Nico Williams. The 22-year-old gained prominence following his dazzling displays at Euro 2024 with the Spanish national side which eventually went on to win the competition by beating England 2-1 in the final in Germany. The speedy winger wanted to join Barcelona last year but a move didn’t materialize due to a combination of many factors.
Though the Spanish attacker stayed committed to Athletic Bilbao, he is eyeing a move away from his boyhood club at the end of the season. He may be tempted by offers from the Premier League bigwigs, who would likely need to pay his €60m release clause. This means there is every chance of a scramble happening in the off-season for Williams’ signature.

The Postecoglou-managed club signed Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich in January, with the option to make the teenage forward’s move permanent in the summer for €60m—a similar fee to what Williams could cost. Tottenham remain confident about signing Tel permanently, and to further bolster their attacking ranks, they must look to trigger the Athletic Bilbao sensation’s release clause.
Williams could be the perfect addition; a player who can operate on both flanks and will bring creativity, dynamism, pace and flair to Big Ange’s attacking unit. The Pamplona-born talent would be a superb potential replacement for Son Heung-min, whose form has fallen off the cliff this season as enters the twilight of his career.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool can offer Williams the chance to feature in the Champions League next season, a proposition that Spurs can realistically achieve this season only by winning the Europa League. All in all, we must fight tooth and nail for the Spanish wing wizard’s signature when the transfer window reopens.
