Tottenham ready to break the bank to retain 26-year-old defensive colossus

Argentine centre-back Cristian Romero is currently sidelined at Hotspur Way, and his absence is being felt at N17, given his integral role in Ange Postecoglou’s squad. The World Cup winner has earned a reputation as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, with performances that have drawn admiration and even interest from European giants like Real Madrid.

Despite his contract at White Hart Lane running until 2027 (transfermarkt), Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to offer their defensive talisman a new deal to secure his long-term future in London and fend off interest from potential suitors.

Club chairman Daniel Levy is ready to reward the 26-year-old with a lucrative new contract. According to TBR Football’s chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are looking to make Romero their highest-paid player, surpassing Heung-Min Son, who currently holds that status. The Lilywhites remain hopeful that they can convince the Argentine to commit his future to the club.

Will Romero accept Spurs’ offer?

While the prospect of a bumper new contract is undoubtedly tempting, Romero will likely be evaluating Tottenham’s long-term ambitions. He is a World Cup winner and a player who thrives in high-pressure, competitive environments. For a centre-back of his calibre, consistent Champions League football and title challenges should be the standard, not the exception.

Meanwhile, Daniel Levy has already started exploring potential replacements for the former Atalanta defender. Reports suggest the Spurs chairman is prepared to offer up to £70 million to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi before the winter deadline, signalling the club’s willingness to invest heavily in their backline.

If Spurs cannot demonstrate progress towards securing silverware in the near future, they may struggle to convince top players like Romero to stay. And if Levy is already planning for life after him, it raises the question if Tottenham truly believe they can hold on to their defensive leader.

Son was rightfully Tottenham’s highest earner given his immense contribution to the club over the years. However, his best years are now behind him and the South Korean is a player in decline. It is imperative that Levy and Co. ensure the stars of today are suitably compensated and offering Romero a paycheque that is more in line with his ability is a step in the right direction. Whether another trophyless season will undo the financial benefit remains to be seen.
