Tottenham top scorer in contention to make competitive return vs Manchester United

Tottenham star Brennan Johnson could be available to face Manchester United on Sunday

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has taken a turn for the worse as they now find themselves out of both domestic cup competitions. Now all the eggs must be put in the Europa League basket, as Ange Postecoglou tries the salvage the season by tasting continental success.

Spurs’ chronic inconsistent displays in the Premier League—where they currently are 14th in the table—stem majorly from an unprecedented injury situation. Ange Postecoglou has had to deal with persistent injury problems over the last three to four months. He had 11 players missing for their FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.

However, Spurs’ injury list is starting to shrink with some key stars expected back for the home game against Manchester United on Sunday.

Brennan Johnson is Spurs’ top scorer this season with 12 goals

According to a report from The Standard, Brennan Johnson is among five Tottenham players “pushing to return to training” this week ahead of the crucial Premier League clash. Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario, Timo Werner and James Maddison are the other stars who could be available.

Brennan Johnson has been missing action with a calf problem since mid-January. He sustained a calf injury during the second half of Spurs’ 2-1 defeat in the North London derby at the Emirates Stadium. The Welshman has missed seven games across all competitions since then. The winger has been part of the sidelined contingent over the past week for the struggling North Londoners, who have won just once in their last five league games.

Johnson is now close to regaining full fitness which should boost Ange Postecoglou’s attacking ranks. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a strong second season at White Hart Lane, cementing his spot on the right flank with consistent displays. He has scored 12 goals and supplied three assists in 32 games across all competitions thus far.

With 12 strikes, the Nottingham-born talent is Tottenham’s current top scorer this season across all competitions. Ange Postecoglou and Co. have missed Johnson’s dynamism, pace, energy and goalscoring ability in recent weeks. The Wales international’s absence created a big problem on the right side of Tottenham’s attack, with Dejan Kulusevski asked to fill in recent games and he hasn’t pulled up trees.

Indeed, injuries to Johnson and other key players have mightily hurt Spurs this season, leaving Big Ange with little choice but to depend on an ever-depleting pool of options. The winger’s potential return to training could not come at a better time for the North London club, as they will have just one game a week until the start of March.
