Mathys Tel managed to open his account for Spurs and the season in general as he scored against Aston Villa last weekend.
His was not a goal for a winning cause, however, but the young Frenchman claims to be ready for the challenge that now faces him for the remainder of the season.

Mathys Tel “not scared” of future after Tottenham debut
After Tottenham’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Aston Villa last weekend, new signing Mathys Tel spoke to the club’s in-house media team and stated that he was not afraid of what lay ahead of him.
“Honestly, we are sad about the results, but I know the quality of my teammates and the staff. I believe in them.
“I’m not scared about the future. We play next week against Manchester (United) and we are going to do our jobs.
“We have to be better, to do much more on the pitch and we will see what happens. Our mentality doesn’t move. We have to keep this energy and keep going until the end.”

He may have been on the losing side, but on an individual level, the 19-year-old had a memorable debut for the rights reasons as he scored in injury time to make sure the Lilywhites had some consolation in defeat.
Spurs have spent €10 million to bring Tel on loan from Bayern Munich for the season, with the option of making the deal permanent for €60 million. Interestingly, their next opponents, fellow strugglers Man United, had also been linked with him, and Tel is reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford despite signing for Spurs on deadline day.
Tel’s goal on Spurs debut was also his first goal of the season.
TTLB Opinion
Tel’s debut goal bodes well for him and Spurs, and one only hopes that the lack of goal contributions on his part this season has been due to him not fitting at Bayern under Vincent Kompany.
The young Frenchman is a typical Ange Postecoglou forward—someone who can play out wide and centrally, which should help the Spurs boss plug some holes in the coming weeks given Dominic Solanke’s injury and Son Heung-min’s troubling form.
With back-to-back cup exits, Spurs have very little left to play for this season. They should have enough in the bank to avoid relegation, and they do have an outside shot at going deep in the Europa League, which puts them in a neat “got nothing to lose” position in which they experiment a bit and have some fun going into the business end of the season. Between this and Postecoglou’s track record with youngsters, Tel is likely to have a good individual phase in the coming months.

The upcoming game against Manchester United is interesting as Tel was linked heavily with a move to Old Trafford over Spurs. The rumours of a summer move are yet to die down and it remains to be seen if the fixture will impact the player’s decision heading into the summer.
